How many air source heat pumps have been installed each year?

Each column shows how many air source heat pumps were fitted with the government grant in England and Wales in that financial year, April to March. Over 91,000 homes have had one so far.

These are the numbers of air-to-water air source heat pumps installed in England and Wales with a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, by financial year (April to March), from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s August 2026 statistics (Ofgem data). Installs are counted when the grant is paid, and the latest year covers April to August only, so it is still filling in. Heat pumps fitted without a grant, and other technologies, are not included. How common are air source heat pumps in each region?

Each bar shows how many homes in a region have had an air source heat pump fitted with the government grant. A longer bar means more homes have one. In the South West, about 1 home in 150 has one. In London, it is about 1 in 660.

Homes off the gas grid are part of the reason. 28% of installs in the South West replaced oil or LPG heating, against 1% in London. It does not explain everything, though: Wales has the highest share, at 32%, and is sixth.

The regional figures divide each region’s grant-backed air-to-water heat pump installs (May 2022 to August 2026) by its number of households in the 2021 Census, and show the result as about 1 home in X, rounded to the nearest 10. The ten regions add up to the national total of 91,320 installs. Households are from 2021, so the true rates are a little lower now that there are more homes. The oil and LPG shares are from installs between 2022/23 and 2025/26. England is shown as nine regions and Wales as one.
