What do heat pump owners say about living with one?
Each bar shows the share of owners with an air source heat pump fitted with the government grant who gave that answer, in surveys run for the government. Most are happy: 91% are satisfied with their heat pump, and 93% say their home is the right temperature. But about 3 in 10 have had a fault, and only about 1 in 4 feel completely confident setting it up to keep running costs down.

Energy bills are mixed. Of the owners who could compare, 61% said their total energy bills went down, 20% said they stayed the same and 19% said they went up. About 3 in 10 owners could not say, for example because it was too early or there was no earlier bill.
The figures are from two surveys of owners of air source heat pumps fitted with a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, run for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as part of its 2026 final evaluation: a follow-up survey 9 to 21 months after installation (3,622 owners, two waves) and a survey soon after installation (5,239 owners, four waves). The people surveyed all chose to install with the grant, and the answers are their own views, so the results do not describe every heat pump owner. The surveys also cover other grant-funded systems; only air source heat pump owners are counted here, so a figure can differ by a point from the report’s.
