What does an air source heat pump cost to install?
Each bar shows the typical cost of installing an air source heat pump of that size in 2025/26, split into what the government grant pays and what you pay. A typical installation cost about £13,000. The £7,500 grant comes off that, so you would pay about £5,500.
The right size comes from a heat-loss calculation for your home. Don’t pick one from this chart. See how to compare quotes, and how big each size is.
Compared with last year
| Size (kW) | 2024/25 | 2025/26 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | £9,951 | £11,494 | +16% |
| 6–8 | £11,653 | £12,164 | +4% |
| 8–10 | £11,931 | £12,686 | +6% |
| 10–12 | £13,525 | £13,943 | +3% |
| 12–14 | £14,813 | £15,365 | +4% |
| 14–16 | £15,450 | £15,496 | 0% |
| All sizes | £12,498 | £13,021 | +4% |
These are costs as reported at the time. After adjusting for inflation, the typical cost for all sizes was about the same: £12,973 in 2024/25 and £13,021 in 2025/26, in 2025/26 prices. So most of the rise is inflation. The 4 to 6kW cost in 2024/25 was lower than in the years either side, so its rise looks larger than for other sizes.
Typical cost is the median installation cost reported by installers on MCS certificates for air-to-water heat pumps installed in 2025/26, grouped by system size (4 to 16kW, which is 94% of installs), from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s August 2026 statistics. “You pay” is our own calculation: that median minus the £7,500 grant. It is a guide, not a quote. Installers report the costs themselves and they may or may not include the grant. The highest and lowest 10% of costs are left out. The £9,000 grant for oil and LPG homes began in July 2026 and is not in these figures. In April to June 2026 the typical cost was £12,908, which is 11% lower than in April to June 2023 after adjusting for inflation.
